Blood work is becoming more commonly performed in veterinary medicine in recent years, and for good reason. Our patients cannot talk to us to explain how they feel, so laboratory testing gives us valuable insight. Many chronic health conditions can be quickly and effectively diagnosed this way. Some diseases that we commonly diagnose using blood work screenings are hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, bladder infections and inflammation, autoimmune diseases, and different types of infectious diseases. In critical patients, we have the ability to perform many of these tests within the hospital itself. This can allow for the correct treatments to be started as soon as possible, which can mean the difference between life and death!
